Description

This Astrobin Debut Object is a barred spiral multi-ring galaxy located 170 million light years away in the constellation of Hydra at a declination of -25 degrees.  It is a magnitude 12 galaxy which spans 3.5 arc-minutes in our apparent view.  This corresponds to a huge diameter of 170,000 light years.

This is an amazing 3-ring galaxy with so many interesting features:

-  The core is surrounded by a bright nuclear star forming ring, hiding behind a foreground star.   If you have never examined nuclear rings before, take a look at the other nuclear ring galaxies in my portfolio at this link.  They are an amazing feature.

-  The long bar is huge, extending 70,000 light years long.  I don’t know of another galaxy bar this long.

-  The mid-region ring is oval and connects perfectly with each end of the bar.

-  The outer disk is surrounded by a faint pseudo-ring, created by the extended star streams of the spiral arms.

Several interesting galaxies are seen in the background.
